Kitchen furniture used to be strictly utilitarian – you would have a wooden table and enough chairs for everyone in the family to sit down and eat together. More often than not, these items were hand made, usually with wood that had been sawed out of a tree that the carpenter had cut down himself. In those times, the only bar and bar stools were located in town, and it was not a place for women and children. Times have changed dramatically since then, both in terms of bar patrons, and kitchen furniture.

The bar in today’s kitchen is a meeting place. The kids so their homework there. You drink your coffee there, do the prep work for a meal. Visit with friends and neighbors. It is the center of attention in the kitchen.

With all of this activity at the bar, you want your kitchen bar stools to be comfortable, as well as matching the overall decor of your kitchen. Ultra modern bar stools wouldn’t look right in a country kitchen, just as a painted yellow stool would stand out in a stainless steel and granite decor.

Before you begin looking at stools, you need to know how high your bar is. If your bar is 41 to 43 inches, look for a tall bar stool that is 29 to 31 inches high. If you bar is 35 to 37 inches high, you’ll want to look at counter stools that are 24 to 26 inches high.

Bar stools are usually made from wood or metal. Some have cushioned seats and some do not. If the stool you are considering has arms, will they fit at your particular bar? Many times the arms are designed so that the stool can’t be pushed up underneath the bar to make more walking room. The amount of space around your bar needs to be taken into consideration as you shop.

You want to have 26 to 30 inches from the center of one stool to the next. This will give you enough room to get to your stool with out interrupting the person next to you and you’ll have plenty of room to eat comfortably.

Although there are literally thousand of choices, with just a little pre-planning, you will be able to find the perfect kitchen bar stool that fits your lifestyle and your decor.
