In today’s modern world, people usually don’t even consider the past when they are planning their kitchens.  While modern kitchens may be great, there are definitely a few great things from decades ago that work wonders when incorporated into today’s homes.  One of these things happens to be the breakfast nook.

You might discount this piece of furniture as something you would find in your grandmother’s home, but the truth is that they can be very useful.  Here are some things that you can do with breakfast nooks.  The first important thing about them is that they provide a defined location for meals.  Today’s families tend to eat all over the place – in the kitchen, on the sofa in front of the television, or at the computer desk.  Having a nook in your dining room will allow your family to enjoy meals together in a more intimate setting.

The next great thing about breakfast nooks is that they are a great place to feed a child.  As any parent knows all too well, it can be a challenge to keep squirmy kids in their chairs long enough for them to finish eating.  With a breakfast nook set in place, you can put your child in the corner, making it much harder for him or her to escape without finishing.

Finally, breakfast nooks are a wonderful place to have a mini home office.  Since they are constructed a bit like a cubicle, they work pretty well for this purpose.  Due to the fact that so many people today are choosing to work from home, breakfast nooks provide a great place to get work done since they offer ample table space and extra room for other important materials.  In fact, you don’t have to use your nook for eating at all.  Some people set them up in the corner of their bedroom for use as an office.

A very popular style of breakfast nook furniture is the corner breakfast nook. This furniture set usually consists of a table, an L-shaped bench that wraps around two sides of the table, and additional seating for the other sides of the table whether that be chairs or benches. The L-shaped bench is supposed to fit into the corner of a room, but many people wonder if that is necessary. There is actually another way you can use a corner breakfast nook furniture set.

If your breakfast nook has a large bay window on one side and a piece of corner furniture would partially cover that up or if you just have a large number of windows on all the walls that you do not want to cover up, then you might consider placing the kitchen nooks so that the bench that is supposed to fit in the corner acts as a barrier between the kitchen and the breakfast nook. That tall bench back on the long side of the L-shaped bench can be a great way to separate the two rooms. Then, people who are sitting on that wrap around bench will be able to enjoy the view from your many windows.

The only problem with this kind of setup is that the back of the corner bench is typically not meant to be seen because it is up against a wall. You might have to dress it up a bit so that it is presentable. But a piece of plywood and some paint will do the trick. You could also cover the plywood with fabric to match the upholstery on the benches.

In order to pull off this arrangement, you will need a large breakfast nook area. The reason many people purchase corner breakfast nook sets is to try and maximize the number of people they can sit at a table with limited space. When you put the furniture into the corner, you do not need to leave extra room for chairs to be pulled out. When the corner nook is moved to the center of the room, you will need to leave a corridor behind the bench seats for people to walk and you lose that space saving advantage.
